Connect to Nature

Camp Backcountry

We believe that children learn, grow, and thrive best when outdoors and immersed in nature, even as the seasons change. Whether campers are exploring, hiking, building forts, riding horses, building a snow fort, or drinking hot chocolate around the campfire, Camp Backcountry is more than just a place to spend the day away from school. It’s an experience that becomes part of who each child is.

Meet Our Team

Any day school doors close, the gates at Camp Backcountry are open! We offer School Break Day single-day camps along with camps for Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break for multiple local school districts. Campers (ages 7-13) get to explore their favorite spots at Camp Backcountry in the fall, winter, and spring!

Please note that for all off-season camps, regardless of available spots, we close registration three days before the camp week or single day begins. This is to ensure that all essential licensing paperwork is in order before your child's first day at Camp Backcountry. If you're a returning camper with an up-to-date CampInTouch profile or a new camper who can guarantee the completion of necessary paperwork, kindly reach out to CampBackcountry@hrcaonline.org to register. Required documentation includes signed waivers, your child's health history, emergency contact information, immunization records, and, if your child requires on-site medication like an epi-pen or inhaler, a doctor-signed Care Plan is necessary. Your cooperation with these requirements is greatly appreciated to ensure a smooth and safe camp experience for your child.

We believe that children learn, grow, and thrive best when outdoors and immersed in nature. Our week-long, full-day outdoor camps support the needs of children by using a whole-child, experiential learning approach. Our goal is to nurture their hearts and minds while strengthening their connection to, and understanding of, the natural world. Whether campers are exploring, hiking, building forts, riding horses, creating art, playing in the woods, or cooking over the campfire, Camp Backcountry is more than just a place to spend your summer. It’s an experience that becomes part of who each child is.

The Leader in Training (LIT) Program is a mentorship program for high school students that focuses on leadership development and prepares them for future jobs, whether as a counselor at Camp Backcountry or elsewhere. This program gives students training, mentorship, and real-life experiences to sharpen their organization, social, and responsibility skills, all while earning volunteer service hours.

LITs will be paired with a counselor-mentor on Monday mornings, who they will learn from throughout the week. LITs will spend the week assisting with, and going on adventures with, this one camp group. Throughout the week, LITs will participate in special activities, leadership training, and exclusive programming designed specifically for the teens.
